Morning Musings on Business, Travel and Personal Transformation

Good Day.  I hope you are enjoying this beautiful Spring Equinox. Or Autumnal down under!

This morning, I once again found myself struggling with my Weds morning writing.  For almost a year fellow Soul Sista, Sandra Larsen, and I have been writing together every Weds morning for 2 hrs.  Sandra in Texas, me here in NV.  Encouraging each other to show up at the page.  For about a month I just haven’t been able to write.  It has probably been longer, as my last blog post was in January.

As many of you know, I am reaching the end of my year-long Reiki Master/Teacher training.  It has been a wonderful year.  FILLED with lessons as well as challenges.  Starting with Rod’s cancer transformation, and ending with placing my attention to finally resolving some health challenges of my own.

For the past 12 days I have been on a virtual FAST.  No dairy, no grains, no nuts, no sugars, no wine, no condiments.  No bananas, no tomatoes, no mushrooms, no peppers.  NO NO NO.  NO COFFEE!  It seems I will have one good day, then one amazingly head aching, crabby, complaining, “I can’t do this” day.  That was yesterday.  Today is better.  One day at a time.

Basically protein, veggies and low glycemic fruits.   My doc tells me it is the yeast dying off, well I must be one big breadball!  Of course, spending the week prior to starting the diet, partying in Reno with my 3 childhood friends, drinking, eating and gambling, probably did cause some extra detoxing!  But what fun!  Thank you Harrah’s!

Never having been much of a cook, I would grab and go through life.  Since childhood I have pretty much gagged on meat.  Needless to say, this diet has been a challenge.  I have tasted many new veggies, fermented foods I would never have tried in the past, including coconut anything.  Did you know there is coconut yogurt?  And found the most delicious scallops at TJ’s. And even Broiled PEACHES!

My friends ask me what I miss most.  Oatmeal!  Can you believe it?  I am actually looking forward to SLOWLY reintroducing foods.  Savoring each one of them for 2-3 days, as I ask my body “Is this food for my highest and best good?”  The answer will be an immediate GUT reaction, I’m sure.

I had started a gluten free diet around the first of the year.  I really was becoming the Pillsbury Dough Girl!  I love bread, pasta, etc.  Before I started this diet, I was proud of the fact I thought I had mastered that portion of the program.  I had found lots of great recipes, gluten free.

Now I will be more conscious of how much sugar and yeast are in the gluten free products I put in mouth, and hopefully snacks and treats will include healthy veggies and fruits in the future.  And I will not have the afternoon low blood sugar blues, or the evening rummaging through the cupboards for something fattening to go with my WINE!  Preferably chocolate in nature.

The wonderful side affect of doing all this?  I’ve LOST 10 lbs already!  The next challenge will be keeping it off!  I feel so much better, and the weight I lost?  It was in my belly!  Now to work on those abs!

Hope you are doing well.  And thanks to everyone who recommended those yummy gluten free beers for St. Paddy’s Day (which of course I couldn’t have then, but might really enjoy come summer!)  And to my friend, Kathy, who cooked up the yummy broth I was able to sip when nothing else satisfied.  My girlfriends who brought gluten free foods to our Gathering this month in response to my need last time we met. I was so touched by your kindness, even though I couldn’t eat it this time.  The cookies are in the freezer Ronda for when I can try them!  Bless you all.  It takes a Village to HEAL!

Are you ready to Move On? ” Our homes hold the key to our happiness.  Applying the principles of Simple Abundance (gratitude, simplicity, order, harmony, beauty & joy) we will learn to let go and move on.  Using the tools of Feng Shui and the Power of Color, we will examine what the rooms in our homes reflect back to us, and learn to shift that energy to heal, to love, to thrive, to prosper…”  Join Kalena for the NEW Soul Salon series examining how our physical environments affect us mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically.  See Info below for dates, times, etc.

Creating your House of Belonging with Simple Abundance

A program designed to help you learn to create a supportive living space that will help you “move on” in many areas of your life including your career, your relationships, your health and spiritual well-being.

Kalena Thiessen, Certified Soul Coach and Business Advisor, will guide you through this program designed around the book by best-selling author, Sara Ban Breathnach.

The book is based on finding your “House of Belonging” which is a Celtic metaphor for the body as the earthly home for our souls, as well as for the deep peace and feeling of safety, joy and contentment found in intimate connections with people, places and houses.

“Moving On” writes Sarah Ban Breathnach, “is for anyone who has ever wanted to reinvent her life and the space where she lives it….  It’s about re-imagining the concept of home and our place in it.  But it’s also about how we cleverly, stubbornly and subversively resist change until chaos or crisis engulf us.”

With the addition of the Phone Soul Salon last month, I have received numerous e-mails expressing curiosity about the Soul Salons.  I will make an attempt to describe them to you, and hopefully some of the participants will share their impressions in the comment section of this blog.

When one hears the words “Soul Salon” many images come up of church or some kind of religious experience. When my brother first heard about it, he got an image of a hair salon! This is what Soul Salons are NOT! These gatherings ARE however, spiritual in nature, based on my years of training in Soul Coaching®, Color Therapy, Feng Shui, Reiki and other healing modalities. Everyone is welcome.

We all search for our Life Purpose and mine is to create safe space for others to share their stories and in the telling, heal themselves. Everyone has a story.  And we rarely get to express it in a safe and supportive environment.  By telling my story, you get to share your story.  In the Soul Salons, we all share in a way that encourages listening in a supportive and transformative way.

Soooo…  “WHAT WILL WE DO in the Soul Salon? I am frequently asked.”  It’s not what will we DO, rather what will we BE.  We are human BEINGS not human DOINGS.   I’m amazed at how in our society we often feel  we need to know the deliverables before we will commit to just BE-ING.  I truly never fully know what will occur.  I connect to the audience and Spirit leads me.  No matter, the salons are always de-Light-Full and everyone leaves feeling lighter and brighter.

Soul Salons are: two-hour gatherings, where individuals come together and meet on a soul plane.  The gatherings begin slowly, enjoying a warm cup of tea or coffee, we make eye contact and SOUL-cialize with one another.  After introductions, I begin by calling in the directions and bringing in light.  We have an altar with sacred objects from nature, representing the sacred in all things. With humor and laughter, we open discussion of the topic of the month or the evening, following a single word theme.  I sometimes do a visualization which is a short, guided meditation, followed by Angel or Soul Cards which brings our focus back to a word to enhance the visualization.  Then we do a little more soul sharing, and by now it is time to go!  I then release the light, and everyone is free to enjoy the rest of their day or night!  There is no homework, no handouts, nothing to DO.  Many of the participants make plans to meet again to discuss business, as most of my clients and friends are true Soul-preneurs.

With friends in many cities across the country, I recently started taking the Soul Salons on the road. I created “A Touch of Soul, A Splash of Color, and A Bite of Chocolate”.   Last month I decided to also offer an additional monthly salon via conference call, allowing everyone to participate wherever they may live.

In January the Salons will include the Theme “MOVING ON” as we examine how our physical environments affect our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical selves, and lean how making minor adjustments can enhance our lives.  The beauty of the Soul Salons is that they are NOT classes.  You can attend one or all of the series and benefit.

Join us on Mon. Dec 12th or Sat. Dec. 17th from 10-noon.  Details on the side bar.  The phone salons will start up in January coinciding with the new series.

My vision is to bring into form Soul Groups, where we can gather to discuss – art, politics, spiritualism, healing, travel, and so much more.   The groups are evolving.  My intent is to introduce people across the country to my work bringing elements of my creative and spiritual workshops to a broader audience.

If you would be interested in attending or hosting a workshop in your area, please contact me.  I LOVE to TRAVEL.

Love, Kalena

Yesterday we spent a lovely Thanksgiving with family, grateful for our health, our love and closeness.  This morning I enjoyed a steaming cup of coffee, while Rod turned on the morning show.  Such violence! What were they calling it?  Competitive Shopping?  Hello? Pepper spray?

When I was young, people died of CONSUMPTION.  Humm, perhaps we are headed towards a new strain?  An infectious disease that can kill millions in a single day..

I will save my shopping for Saturday and venture out in support of Small Businesses, like my own and my clients.  Who have struggled in this economy to keep their doors open and to bring us the unique, the handmade, the gifts that say “I thought you deserved something special.”

Whether a handmade tea cozy, or a gift certificate for a massage, or better yet, a gift certificate for the services of a CPA to straighten out your books at the end of the year; consider putting your money back into our economy in a small way.  Hire someone you know.  Have your house cleaned…  There are an endless number of SMALL Business owners.  And they are not the ones who get the big tax breaks.  They are the ones that are feeding families and serving you.  Seek out a small shop and buy just one gift for that someone special this weekend and throughout the holidays.  And gift a service from one of the professional service providers you love.  Hint, hint…  Gift certificates available for Year Ahead readings, Color Sessions, Reiki, Soul Salons. All at Holiday pricing.

I read the sweetest poem on a friend’s blog yesterday entitled “Thanksgiving”.  You can read the entire poem at www.   Victoria Slotto is a gifted writer.  Here is an excerpt that spoke to me:

counting blessings
assuaging guilt
so many

soul steam
circling hot coffee cup
fogs inside

god light
intense fall color
dance with me

Hope you enjoy as I am this lovely FAMILY DAY!  Spend it with your family, not out in the malls …  Cracking nuts, sipping hot cider, hugging a little one.  I am grateful for my soul family.

PHONE SOUL SALON this coming Monday, Nov. 28th at 6pm PST.  Last chance for FIRE.   Info on sidebar.  Contact me directly at to receive call-in number.

On 9-11 I wrote the following bloggett in my journal – “I’ve looked at life from both sides now, from red & green and still somehow, it’s illusions I recall, I still have not known life at all…”   I had awakened to this song playing in my head.  Along with thoughts of refinancing our home.  Thinking about the appraisal, ‘will the house reach that magic number’, was keeping me up at night.  As I stressed over my own attempts to deal with the banks, my thoughts drifted to all the people…  since 9-11 who had lost not only their homes but their souls.

The house did refinance, it made the magic number and more!  Yeah!  Pressure is off, no longer making 2 payments each month!  Point made – now is a good time to refinance.  Also a great time to reconnect with your soul!

Two months later on Friday on 11-11-11, the Bristlecone Pinenuts gathered at my home for an overnight of camaraderie and ceremony to welcome in the new energy of that powerful night.  Each year a group of us trek down to Inyo National Forest to talk to the Bristlecone Pines, the most ancient of living organisms on the face of the planet. Some of these trees have been carbon dated over 5,000 years old.  Google them, fascinating story & photos.

Quite by accident, I recently learned we actually have a small Bristlecone on our property.  It was a tiny scrubby shoot when we moved here. Covered in spiderwebs, it was spindly and had brown needles. Rather than simply pulling it out by its roots, Rod cleared out the cobwebs, fed it and I put a ring of stones around its base.  It seemed to love the attention and came back.  Today 15 years later, it stands not much taller than me.  (Which isn’t very tall.)  Bristlecones are not known for their fast growth.  They cling to the mountain edges where nothing could possibly endure the harsh winters and lack of water and even soil.  This small toddler we adopted, now receives water from the lawn sprinklers.  We planted a seedling of an oak tree next to it about five years ago, and today the slow growing oak and the Bristlecone seem to be holding hands as a pine branch reaches out for the mighty oak.  As we sat around the small tree, one of my friends commented the Bristlecone is like me, edgy and reaching out in all directions, and the Oak is like Rod, loving and strong, welcoming me home.

We wrote our wishes for what we wanted to bring into the New Year on prayer cards made from gold pieces of paper with teal colored string and hung them on the tiny tree.  We also wrote what we wished to release from the old year on white pieces of paper and lit them from the flame of the Bridget candle and then dropped them into the bowl of sacred holy water brought from the home of my ancestors in Knock, Ireland.

After setting our intentions, we gave the water to the baby Bristlecone and the remains of the paper we buried under the leaves to nourish the tree until Spring.  We asked the baby tree to bring our prayers to the Ancient Ones until we meet them again next summer, when the snow melts in the high county.

That night I had a vision of the 11-11-11 numbers, where individual 1’s, met another 1 and engaged in conversation.  Then the pair joined hands with the other ones, like the dashes in 11-11-11.  When we gather each month for our Reiki share we come together in a circle, left hand up to receive, right hand down to give and we swirl our energies, receiving from the person on our left, sending the energy through us, out to the person on our right, swirling around the circle.  This is what I saw, 6 people swirling their uniqueness to the next, and the next, and the next, the number 6 signifying unconditional love, then the next 11, the hour joining the circle and then there were 8 the number of abundance; followed by the 11 minutes, making 10, the 1 to the 10th power, and on and on, as 11 (2 coming together to co-create), joining other 11’s around the globe, circling the earth….  Each with our own unique gifts and talents, giving and receiving in harmony with no competition, only cooperation, co-creation…

It is happening.  I feel it already.  How about you?  What were your experiences from the 11-11-11 portal?  Did you walk through?  Do you feel differently, dear reader?  I know I do. Something has shifted within me.  I am seeing things manifesting almost instantly.  Friends calling with ways we can co-create.  Write your comments here.  Til next time, this is Kalena, musing on a Wednesday morning.

Note:  Saturday’s Soul Salon will be here at Chateau Kalena from 10-noon.  Element: FIRE   Come tie your intentions to the little Bristlecone.  I’ll have the fire lit and the hot chocolate!  Oh BTW, when I looked out the little Bristlecone is standing straighter and I swear has grown a few inches!

My trip to the Midwest was transformative.  Blog post below tells more.  Thank you everyone in Chicago and Quincy, IL who hosted and attended the 3 Soul Salons I put on while there. I learned so much from each of you, and made lovely new friends for a lifetime!

I am currently in Quincy, IL.  America’s Heartland, preparing for tonight’s Soul Salon.  What a wonderful place!  I have met so many inspiring creative people in the short time I have been here.  So welcoming!  On Monday I arrived by train from Chicago, after doing two Soul Salons up there (thanks to Peggy Burns and Sharon Burch who both hosted the Salons – one on the Southside and one on the North).

While in Chicago, I slipped away with my two sisters to St. Joe, Michigan.  Beautiful spot right on Lake Michigan.  I also had an opportunity to spend time with several childhood friends who came to my Soul Salons.  Reconnecting after 30 years, we gabbed so long into the night, we had to SLEEP FAST!  Thank you all for coming and your hospitality while I was in Chicago.  It was delightful to feel the support of my family and professional friends for the work I am now doing. Looking forward to chatting by phone or SKYPE when I return to Nevada next week and booking Year Ahead or Color Readings for many of you.

Back to the Heartland.  Spending time with my oldest brother, Jim Burns, has been a real joy.  We really flowed into an easy rhythm after the hustle & bustle of the big city.  Quincy is really laid back, yet experiencing a resurgence of energy I hadn’t felt just a year ago when I was here last.  A very spiritual community.   In the short time I have been here, we have enjoyed wonderful healthy fare at lovely restaurants (I love to EAT when I travel), grabbed a cup of java at the local gathering place, squezzed in a yoga class, attended a spiritual book club, and met lots of great people.

Deborah Lee of Four Winds Farm (who many of you met watching her U-Tube Video still available on the sidebar) has been so supportive! Thank you Deborah.  Having never met before, we became fast friends!  She is hosting my next Soul Salon tonight, and will have the Open House for her new facility tomorrow evening!  It will be a BARN Raiser for sure.

We attended an Herb Class with Deborah yesterday and I learned so much I am ready to go home and gather seeds for next spring!  Many of the attendees are small farmers, lovingly tending the soil, raising their goats, rabbits, in the Blessing Way.  We even enjoyed duck eggs for lunch!  Truly the land of milk & honey…

I love the Heartland.  Riding the train downstate, I didn’t want to miss a moment.  This time of year when the corn has been cut, you can see forever.  Seeing the farms and silos, I was truly brought home to the richness & abundance of this land.  And the soul of the people who love the land so much.

Thank you all for your welcoming embrace.  I am looking forward to tonight and Soul-cializing with many of you and hope to return soon.

For years, I offered The IRISH HOUR, my virtual radio program.  For some reason, it kind of fell by the wayside, so I thought I would offer up an Irish tale today to you my blog readers.

I love Halloween.  It was my favorite holiday as a child. Going to Catholic school, we always got the next day off as it was a  Holy Day, The Feast of All Saints.   It was a time of honoring the dead and the saints who were an example of how we  should live our lives.

Ghosts and Goblins roamed the neighborhood on this night of nights, when it was believed the dead rose from their graves.  Growing up in Chicago, we had cemeteries galore in our neighborhood, each with at least a few relatives and friends in residence.  Plenty of dark places to walk past and maybe hear the rustling of chains as the graves opened and feel the wisp of a touch
graze you as something flew by.

I had no fear of ghosts. Since I was a baby in my crib, my grandmother, who died in childbirth with my mother, began visiting me on a regular basis.  When I was four, my maternal grandfather died at the beginning of October, and my last remaining grandparent, my father’s mother, died at the end of October.  They too began to visit me regularly for nighttime visits.   As many of you know, I am 100% of Irish descent, and well talking to the dead is in my bones, so to speak.

Halloween is New Year’s Eve to the Celts.  It is a time when the veil between worlds is thin, and we believe our ancestors come to call, just before the FEAST.  Some of them may be included in the Saints, and well some of them, might still be working off their Sinner status.  We called that Purgatory.  God is good, and really you have to have done something REALLY BAD to burn in hell for ever after.  Purgatory was the tween place, where you go before you get to see God.  At least that’s how my young mind remembers it.

Tween places are magical to the Irish people.  Dawn & Dusk, the shore where water meets the sand, the edges of the mists, all open us to the unexpected, a place where logic doesn’t exist, the places of fantasy and mystery.

And this year, I find myself drawn back once again to Chicago.  A place where Halloween is a National Holiday, I swear.  Where
everyone decorates their homes to welcome in the Goblins, where bobbing for apples is still an event, and children go house to house dressed in costume, crying TRICK OR TREAT, Money or Eat…

Samhain (pronounced “Sowain”) literally means Summers End.  The lunar feast took place at the time of the Full moon in October which took place earlier this week.  It marked the Celtic New Year and lasted about a week.  The Celts believed that this was the time of year when the Earth turned away from the light and began to embrace the darkness.  The harvest was already in, the cornstalks became like ghost figures in the field.  And the doors to the Otherworld flew open, and the veil between this world and the world of Spirit all but disappeared.  What if, even for only one night, we were able to communicate once again with loved ones that have crossed, and receive their guidance and instruction?  I have felt my own mother close by the past few days, and had numerous friends who just lost their own mothers in the past few weeks.  Mom came a calling to let me know she is well
and sending her love to everyone.  Greeting the new arrivals in Heaven.

Already our nights are becoming longer and just this morning I was surprised how dark it was at 6 am. So as you snuggle into the dark the next few weeks as Halloween approaches, open your heart to hear the whispers of you loved ones from the other side.  BE WELL.  And hope to see you in Chicago at one of my Soul Salons!

Also check out the link on your right to Four Winds Farm where I will be doing a Soul Salon in Quincy, IL on Nov 3rd.
